Among Yukio Mishima's late plays is The Terrace of the Leper King ( 『癩王のテラス』 ).

Mishima wrote it during his final years, when he was already deeply entrenched in his own personal mythology and the philosophy of the "beautiful death."

I hesitate to use a label like " masterpiece " to describe it ...

I think Japanese is a language that is hard to subvocalise compared to others. Because how to read a kanji is not predetermined and it depends on the context.

I could agree here too, but even here this requires individuals to take up that task. I still don't see how that succeeds without new individuals in the culture being born. And does that not at some level mean that births are a necessity?
