What is your guy's favorite poem, poet, era, form, or language/tradition?

My favorite has always been Ode To a Nightingale by John Keats, but I'm woefully underread when it comes to poetry.

My favourite for a long time has been The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S Eliot. Here is one excerpt I like.

For I have known them all already, known them all:
Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons,
I have measured out my life with coffee spoons;
I know the voices dying with a dying fall
Beneath the music from a farther room.
So how should I presume?


I see it as the examplar of modernist poetry, deeply resonant and lyrical. It may soon change though; as a prelude to his poem-novel Pale Fire, I've been reading some poetry of Vladimir Nabokov, and have thoroughly enjoyed his work. It feels close in ways to some work I have done, which is an affirming feeling. Today I enjoyed reading The Refrigerator Awakes, but I want to keep looking through his works to find something that really stands tall.

I haven't met any other poems that are both syntactically and semantically perfect like Iroha Uta.

I'm not sure if it's my favorite, but I really like "Remembrance" by Emily Brontë. It's one that got me back when I didn't really care much for poetry:

One of famous tankas in Hyakunin Isshu (the number 40) written by Taira no Kanemori. I have always been thinking that this is unbelievably cute.

Since the translations were bad, I directly translated these by myself for you.

I like the way in which it continues to the number 41 written by Mibu no Tadami. This tanka lost to the number 40 (Shinoburedo) in Tentoku Dairi Uta-awase.

My favorite is "Seděly žáby v kaluži", or "Frogs sat round a puddle", from Písně kosmické published in 1878 by Jan Neruda. It's a collection of poems about the Universe. English translation taken from here.

Frogs sat around a puddle
And gazed at heavens high
Frog teacher pounding into skulls
The science of the sky.

He spoke about the heavens
Bright dots we see there burning
And men watch them, "astronomers"
Like moles they dig for learning.

When these moles start to map the stars
The large becomes quite small
What's twenty million miles to us
They call one foot, that's all.

So, as those moles did figure out
(If you believe their plan)
Neptune is thirty feet away
Venus, less than one.

If we chopped up the Sun, he said
(Awed frogs could only stare)
We'd get three hundred thousand Earths
With still a few to spare

The Sun helps us make use of time,
It rolls round heaven's sphere
And cuts a workday into shifts
"Forever" to a year

What comets are is hard to say
A strange manifestation
Though this is not a reason for
Some idle speculation

They are no evil sign, we hope

As in a story we got from
Lubyenyetsky, great knight

A comet there appeared, and when

One poem I really like "Lepanto" by G.K. Chesterton, which I have enjoyed ever since I memorized it for extra credit in high school.

This is the link to the poem (I refrain from quoting it in its entirety given its length). While I cannot recall it all from memory anymore, at times I repeat the first two lines of the poem in my head:

White founts falling in the courts of the sun,
And the Soldan of Byzantium is smiling as they run

Another poem I like is Catullus 85, which reads:

I hate and love. You wonder, perhaps, why I'd do that?
I have no idea. I just feel it. I am crucified.

(for those who want the original Latin):

Odi et amo. Quare id faciam, fortasse requiris?
Nescio, sed fieri sentio et excrucior.


Additionally, Schiller's "An die Freude" is good (even when just reading it outside of the context of Beethoven). My favorite lines, which I often repeat to myself, are:

Seid umschlungen Millionen!
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder – überm Sternenzelt
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.

There are others I like, but these three are ones that come to mind.
