Games to play together

Post by Amlux »

Hi there! Sometime it would be fun to host some multiplayer games together. If you have any suggestions or games you would be likely to join, let us know here. Bonus points for ones that are free or easily available to download. Here are some I have experience with or would like to try more:

Twinkle Star Sprites: Amazing 1v1 shooting game where you chain patterns. Surprisingly easy to get the hang of quickly. Can play on Fightcade.

Touhou Kaieidzuka ~ Phantasmagoria of Flower View: Similar to the above, but with danmaku patterns and Touhou characters!

Arcana Heart 3 LOVE MAX!!!!!!: My favorite fighting game, but not necessarily the most well-known or easy to get into for new players.

Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel: Fighting game starring visual novel heroines! I'm not an expert at how to play it, but I like it quite a lot.

Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne: My favorite RTS game. I mostly play 1v1 but could be talked into FFA or 2v2.

StarCraft: Brood War: Free if you have Battle.net. I'm not very well-versed in it but it would be fun to learn together! I have StarCraft II also, which is slightly less soulful but definitely a lot more accessible.

Unreal Tournament: Classic arena shooter which is about as straightforward and easy to understand as you need it to be. Now abandonware which is available to freely download. I haven't played 2004 but I think it's in the same state.

OpenLieroX: Basically like a real-time version of Worms which is super chaotic and silly. I only played it a bit but it seems like it has a lot of potential.

ToeJam & Earl: Anyone who hasn't played this should try to play it with a friend. It's a two-player game only but watching people play it is almost as fun as playing it yourself. Can play on Fightcade.

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike: My favorite of the series, though I'm not particularly good at it. Can play on Fightcade.

Some fighting game series that I haven't played very much but like to experience more are: World Heroes, Samurai Spirits (aka Samurai Shodown), King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Darkstalkers, Soul Calibur, Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and Melty Blood. Most are available on Fightcade. I've never played the Touhou fighting games which are also fun, I'm sure. ^^

Some of these would be better with the possibility to join a VC so I might try to set up a Mumble server before officially doing any of them.

Do you have any ideas? Any I missed which you would be interested in or willing to play as a group? Or as a kind of tournament with turns if it's 1v1?

Minetest AKA Luanti (Minecraft clone), Xonotic (AFPS), OpenArena (AFPS, Quake III clone), Freedoom (Doom clone), Mindustry (tower defense, kinda Factorio clone), 0 A.D. (RTS, Age of Empires clone, though my computer seems to be too weak to run this at acceptable FPS sadly), SuperTuxKart (racing, MarioKart clone). All are libre AKA free as in freedom. Also not sure if it counts, but chess on Lichess ^_^ There are fun crazy variants like horde chess as well.

I'll second drummyfish's suggestion of Xonotic if we go the AFPS route, at least compared to stuff like Q3A or QuakeWorld, the barrier to entry is relatively low and there isn't quite as much snowballing with skill disparity between players, but it's still really fun and has quite a bit of depth if you get deep into it. Also Twinkle Star Sprites >>>>>>>>

I wonder how we would set up game servers if we did follow through with this? I can assume Amlux, having an HTTP host and possibly a forwarded port already, could figure something out, but I do know that, at least for some games like Teeworlds and OpenArena, there's already a bunch of empty, desolare servers we could use instead, where the question would be which region of server to use. Also in the case of Freedoom there's a free server hosting site (and WAD distributor!) at The Sentinel's Playground but it requires an account to start a server and only hosts servers for Zandronum, which definitely isn't ideal.

I've played Xonotic and I can say that the skill gap and snowballing are definitely still there, it's just the case for any AFPS. Probably less than OpenArena, but it's still there. It's still a good suggestion though :D
I am some dude. A semi-nomad of Teh Internetz. A rascal, if you will.

I was also wondering if it would be fun to raid some libre MMORPG such as Stendhal. I played it once but I was practically alone in the world. If we could gather like at least 15 people to hop in at once, that could be cool.
