Random question for you guys: what is your party trick?

For me it's probably knowing like 20+ digits of pi, I memorized it once as a challenge. Something I'd like to learn is blindfold chess -- I've now been able to somewhat keep track of the board but I sweat like hell and only won blindfolded against a random move bot :ase: My goal is to be able to beat a beginner player.

EDIT: Actually I have a fun little story behind why I decided to memorize pi digits. It was my first year at the university when a professor was teaching us C programming in a big lecture hall with projector showing his laptop screen. He was a sort of programming chad known for being a genius (at least from our young students' point of view), he literally looked like Zapp Brannigan from Futurama and was always smashing code in vim like a speedrunner, which likewise impressed all the newbie freshmen who all used like Notepad++ or Geany. Anyway one day he was writing something and needed the value of pi, so he wrote "#define PI" and then like 30 digits just from memory, everyone was stunned :happy: I thought that was pretty cool so that's what motivated me.

cleaning out my google docs and i found some old writings i did during middle school/early high school
The Prince of Nonsense Land
This is Nonsense Land’s future king
He glues his jewels on his feet
And spills his money down his sink
I’ve never seen such a fool
Who thinks roasting flies is pretty neat

He eats on top of appliances
While standing on his head
You would wonder if he has a licence
When he’s running over working men
Oh, I hope they aren’t dead!

This prince does somersaults in the sky
This prince plays tennis underground
This prince’’s engaged with a crusty eye
And whatever are we to do when
The prince squeals when he drowns

“He’s not fit for a king!” you’d riot
Because of all the things he has done
But the people of Nonsense Land would deny it
These people simply love their prince
They think these bad habits are fun
Planet Jollop
This day was probably the best day of my life. My colleagues and I were walking towards the shuttle, heading to the moon. We were heading there to investigate a meteor that had landed there. While my colleagues were calmly walking down the aisle, I was quaking in excitement.

We stepped inside the shuttle and waited until we were ready to go. When the signal was bleeping, Leo pushed the button and we blasted off. I squealed and squeezed the girl beside me’s hand, but she took my hand off of hers. “We’re on a mission, not going to a party, ” she said in disgust. “Make yourself useful and put away the food in an hour.”

I sighed. Renè was always so cold. I read a book on astronomy until Renè shouted at me to put away the food. I put them away and memorized some galaxy sizes. We then ate some dinner before going to bed. We repeated that for a few days along with exercises and socializing.

We were a week into our mission when Isra stammered, “Guys… We’re out of the atmosphere..” When I asked if that was bad, she shouted, “ No! We’re far past the moon and there’s a planet right in front of us! We must do an emergency landing! “But how is that possible?” Leo asked. “We were heading to the moon just yesterday.” “I think we put the shuttle on auto-pilot,” I whispered.

as Leo prepared for the landing, the rest of us put on our suits. Then Leo put on his and we all quickly put on our seatbelts hoping for the best. We sat there for about half an hour before we landed. Then we opened the door looking at our surroundings. The strange place looked as if it was made of sand, with bits of incomplete glass scattered here and there.

“What is this place?” René wondered out loud. Isra ran inside to check in her book if there was any planet that looked or had sand. When she came back, she repetitively shouted, “There are none! There are none!” Then she ran back inside to bring out the rover to take pictures.

“What do you mean?” I asked when we walked inside. “I just checked, and there are no planets with sand! We're going to be rich!” We celebrated as Isra took so many pictures that the rover couldn't take any more.

When we came back to Earth, we became famous. We went to talk shows, were paid thousands of dollars, and won trophies and ribbons. We also got to name the planet. We thought about it for a long time and decided to name it Planet Jollop. I went from an astronaut-in-training to a hit celebrity. Who knew a simple accident could change my life!
The Scarecrow
Raymond the scarecrow has a very unhappy life. Like a regular scarecrow, he helps the farmer scare the crows away from his pumpkins. But he doesn't like this life. He wants to travel around the world and become a movie actor. But instead, he has to stand all day, watching the birds eat the pumpkins. The birds aren’t even scared of him!

One rainy morning, Raymond was more miserable than usual. The rain was getting into cotton and hay. He was moping around, thinking about famous actors, when a huge ugly crow flew onto his arm. “Hey!” Raymond screamed. “Get off me you filthy animal!” “Stop shouting,” the crow scolded. “The farmer will hear you.” Annoyed, the scarecrow hollored, “Do you think I care about that silly farmer! I want to be a movie star, not a disgusting scarecrow!

“Alright, already,” the crow muttered. “Look, if you let us eat all the pumpkins we can eat, we’ll sneak you out of here and take you all around the world. Raymond excitedly agreed and let all the crows eat the pumpkins until their bellies were full. After a few hours, the farmer found out about the crows eating the pumpkins and took his gun out to shoot the crows. Then the crows grabbed Raymond’s head and flew away from the farmer.

Now, the crow is enjoying his life. He and the crows watch movies by hiding at the bottom of the theater. His plans for next year is to fly to Mexico.
The Mysterious Man
For the last thirteen years, my life was quite ordinary. My mother and father are divorced, so I live with my mom while my dad lives with his other wife a few blocks away. He visits often, taking me to the movies or a cafe.

It was my fourteenth birthday, but I didn't have much of a party. I had a few presents from relatives, but that was all. Instead, my mother, father and I went to a restaurant and had seafood. When we came home, we put on our pyjamas and watched TV.

We were having a splendid time when someone knocked on the door. “I’ll get it!” I said. When I opened the door, a strange man was staring at me with eerie eyes. He had a grey coat on, even though it was the middle of July. His wavy grey hair went up to his chest and had teeth that were either stained yellow or missing.

The man violently shoved me aside and shrieked at the top of his lungs, “Bryan!” I shrieked in fear. Was he going to hurt my father? The man continued, “I’ve finally found you, after all these years..” “What do you want?” Dad shouted. “Get out of here before I call the police!” The man cackled. “You don't remember, Bryan? How unfortunate. Maybe this will help you remember.”

He then pulled out a strange stick and muttered something under his breath. With a flick of his wrist, Dad was slowly turning into stone!

My mother gasped in horror. “What have you done to my husband?!” The madman smirked. “Well, when I was a lad, your husband would taunt me because I didn't know how to read. To teach him a lesson, I learnt magic spells to take sweet revenge!”

I started sobbing. “Please give my dad back! I’ll do anything!” I begged him. He paused for a moment. “Fine. However, I want something in return. For a whole year, I will live here and you must be my servants; I'm too elderly to take care of myself. But if I see a single fault, your father will perish in flames.”

We reluctantly agreed. That year was the worst year of my life. The man’s name was Fred, and what a selfish man he was. He made us cook him more food than he could eat. The leftovers were thrown at my dad’s stone body. We were told to clean areas that were spotless, but the dirty areas were pigsties.

At the end of the year, my mom and I were tired, bony, and depressed. Fred walked up to us and said, “Well done girls. Now your father’s spell shall be undone.” He waved his wand and recited the words. We cried out in joy and squeezed Dad tightly. Fred kept his promise and left our house. When he left, my family and I rejoiced by having a party.

Ten years have passed since that incident. I’m now a dentist, cleaning children's teeth. I still live with my mother and father because I never want to leave them after all we've been through. Fred has probably died by now, but there's a good chance he put an immortal potion on himself.
Jack and the Beanstalk
Above the countryside a long time ago, a giant lives a quiet, humble life in the clouds. A giant living in the clouds is quite unusual; most giants live in the mountains on land, completely unbothered by whomever they step on. The giant hated the thought of hurting others just because of his size, so he packed his things and made a home for himself in the skies.

He reclined on his hammock, enjoying his favourite pastime, watching the country folk from above; he can easily observe the residents from high up in the clouds. The reason why he doesn’t want to hurt the smaller creatures on land is because he has a fascination with them, especially human beings. Giants have a much simpler life than men do, and this giant finds their way of life so complex and interesting.

Once he’s satisfied, he walks back to his abode to do some house cleaning. He starts by wiping down his precious gems in his glass case. Before the giant left his family’s mountain, he had a small collection of jewels his family amassed together. They were technically family heirlooms, so he took great care of them.

Just as he was finished cleaning the last gem, the giant heard a loud noise from outside; it shook and dropped everything in his house, including his gems, which he caught just in time. He carefully put them back in his case. Was someone trying to invade his home, to steal his dear heirlooms? Without a second thought, he yelled, “FE FI FO FUM!”, an intimidating giant call. This giant is much larger than the others, so the thief would know he’s a force to be reckoned with.

After a few cries, the giant inched over to the window to see what was outside. He wasn’t astonished at the lofty beanstalk peeking out of the clouds; obviously giants aren’t going to be amused at the giant food they eat. What he was shocked about was the person climbing that beanstalk.

It was a scrawny country boy, holding a large bag in his teeth. The giant knew this boy’s story well; he was born deaf and to a family who were struggling to make ends meet on their farm. There weren’t any teachers that specialised in teaching deaf children, so the boy’s parents spent most of their money on their child’s education, which was very expensive. Last night, there was heavy rainfall that flooded their crops. It was no big deal to someone as large as the giant, but it was devastating for the boy and his family, who could no longer afford to teach their child. The boy was about to steal the giant’s riches, and he wanted to make the theft as easy for the child as possible.

Luckily the boy could not hear, so he wasn't intimidated by the giant’s screams from before. The giant stomped over to his bedroom and pretended he was sound asleep, to give the boy the go ahead to take as much as he wanted. It took a while for the boy to fit most of the gems in his bag, because they were so heavy and large and the boy was slim and the bag could only carry a few. He anxiously scurried out of the house with the giant’s belongings, and climbed down the beanstalk.

The giant got out of his bed and watched the boy run off into the distance. He was upset that his family heirlooms were gone, but he knew that they went to a good place. In fact, he was much happier now that they were gone, because he had given it to someone who would have appreciated it much more than he could ever have.
A fanfiction-like theory i made for the object show "ONE". it's similar to "Battle for Dream Island" and "Inanimate Insanity". this was written when the 8th episode released
Theory
So way before ONE started, object shows were a real thing. talking objects were seen as toys to make your own object show to humans. but the objects refused to do any more object shows and wanted to be seen as the same as humans, not toys to play with. Years pass and the objects have formed their own civilization similar to humans. They have jobs, marriages, currencies, ect. These days, object shows are a thing of the past. objects and humans don't interact anymore, and object shows and humans are completely forgotten to objects though humans still remember it. Fast forward to now, airy is a human scientist who wants to study objects and object shows. He doesn't see these talking objects as intelligent beings, he sees them as, well, objects. (maybe related to this theory but i think that airy or some other human created the talking objects) why airy went to a coma (?) for for over half a year is that it's abstarcty. i believe that before ONE airy hosted other object shows, for example the object show with circley. circley said they've been to loads of object shows before, so this makes sense. but why abstracty? When airy first started his research abstracty (abstracty was originally an abstract painting) circley and toothpaste were his first victims, along with some other objects. most of the objects escaped, toothpaste died (some say that's airys dead body, I'll maybe write a theory on that too) and abstracty and circley were the only survivors. airy continued his research, doing object show after object show, with circley and abstacty being alone afterwards. abstacty eventually went mad because they were mentally unstable to begin with, but airy still kept them since they were interesting to him, and circley just adapted to his new life. after abstacty was finally eliminated, they planned to attack airy. once abstacty put airy in a coma (?) in ONE 8, abstacty disguised themselves as him to free the trapped contestants. My guess is that airy is dead and hopefully everyone goes back to their families and old lives. this has a happy ending so it's not happening lol

that is the nerdiest shit you've ever done

althou i did a nerdy shit with π once, i came up with my own program to calculate π i came up with it while I was in a feverish state last summer unable to sleep because of the heat

basically it just tries every point to calculate the area of a quarter of a circle (actually not every point i optimized it)

it can get 14 digits right at this precision but over that 64 bits integer aren't enough, i guess it ain't a very efficient program but i came up with it myself

also I implemented the same code in Lua and it showed me that luajit is insanely faster than normal lua, but it have a tendency to do everything in float while lua is smart enough to know when it can stay in integer

That's awesome, sounds like the kind of shit I think about, that makes me quite happy :happy: I thought it was going to be monte carlo but it's basically a numerical integration of y = sqrt(1 - x^2), right? I can see some optimization potential still, but a compiler probably already does it. In the innermost loop you can have x*x precomputed. Also you can avoid multiplication because you can produce the series x^2 = 0, 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, ... by just adding odd numbers to the previous number (0 + 1 = 1, 1 + 3 = 4, 4 + 5 = 9, 9 + 7 = 16, ...). I am wondering if binary search instead of just y-- would speed it up, but maybe not because the inner loop probably doesn't make too many iterations on average. I am also thinking: what if you use some circle rasterization algorithm? Midpoint only makes one decision per step in the x direction. I will probably spend a lot of time thinking about this now, thank you :D Post updates if you have any.

idk maybe it is but in my head it was just like something like this :

basically quarter of a circle check point per point from right to left when you're in the circle you add the value and you go down one line then left again

then the total will kinda be like the area of the quarter of a circle, thanks to simple math i figured if the circle's size was like 20 with a few more zeros I wouldn't have to do any kind of calculation to get the pi digits the result will naturally be π*10^n

it may be basically like monte carlo but without the weird-ass randomness so better than monte carlo actually

Yeah that's how I understood your code. It is computing the area under the graph of a function that is shaped like quarter a circle (from Pythagorean theorem: f(x) = sqrt(1 - x^2)) -- that is integration. Monte Carlo by definition works with randomness, so this isn't Monte Carlo, but I like your method better here. Picrel is something to consider: area A and B are actually the same -- a circle is 8 symmetric, so you can only compute 1/8th. In your code that will probably mean stopping once you cross the diagonal (when ymax becomes < x, or > I dunno now), then the total area of the quarter circle can be computed something like current_area * 2 - x^2 I guess.

EDIT: BTW could you make an algorithm that would be producing pi digits INFINITELY? Like you just run the program and it will keep writing more and more digits as long as you leave it running. Or maybe it doesn't have to output digits one by one but can be spitting out progressively more accurate approximations of pi, one per line (without any limit on number of digits imposed by any C data type). I have once implemented one such algorithm from some paper I found (it's on LRS wiki) but TBH I don't remember how it worked anymore and I also don't know how to do this now, I'd have to think about it. It's just something I thought of now as a challenge :think: Lemme know what you think :happy:
