I'm recently interested in how to minimise resource usage instead of other things like performance. It feels that the modern world is seriously inefficient in terms of resource usage.
I want to share what I found / will find about this topic. So I make this thread.

First of all, heat is cheap but electricity is expensive. You can generate heat energy just by rubbing your hands. Ditch every electronic device the purpose of which is to generate heat.
To generate electricity, usually power plants boil water to rotate the turbines. The heat energy comes first. It is transformed into the mechanical energy to rotate the turbines. Then it is transformed into electricity by the electromagnetic induction.
During this process, about 55-67% of the initial energy is lost typically. That is an overall efficiency of 33-45%. Combined-cycle power plants are more efficient, but their efficiency is still 60+%. Also during the transport of electricity, 5-15% of the electricity is lost.
So just burn fuels directly instead of using electricity to generate heat.

laptops and mini pcs are way more power efficient than a full desktop pc setup, I rarely ever use my desktop I only turn it on when I need high compute power (or need heat, my last winters were survived using only the computer to heat up my room, running folding@home when I don't have something else to do)
for next winter I moved to a new apartment that is bigger and on ground floor so idk what will happen but i'm considering a few things, I could build a kotatsu all I would need is some kind of table and some kind of blanket then I can use the computer as the heating element, I have a USB heating jacket, I've seen tutorials on how to turn old cardboard and paper into fuel but living in an apartment limits the experimentations I can do with fire

Based thread. I think the number one idea (for me anyway) is to reduce and optimize power consumption rather than search for ever more miraculous "sustainable" energy sources to maintain the crazy addiction for infinite growth and far too high "comfort" levels. In this I've been experimenting at my caravan with things like my "doomsday computer" and "paper internet". The computer is a simple Raspberry Pi 3B+ with a small display, fully running on a power bank that can be charged with small solar panels. TBH I've never completely charged the bank with the panels yet, though, so I dunno how long that takes

I've been a little lazy and always charged the bank at my parents' house and given the minuscule power consumption of the simple computer, it takes hell of a long time to drain, so I don't charge often. Even if it took several days to charge a power bank with the solar, the computer will last longer (given "normal" use), so if you have two power banks (one being used while the other one is charging), you can always have power for the computer. As for performance, it's sufficient even for playing videos and simple games like Freedoom, but I mostly just read text or view images. I think power consumption could be taken to hilarious extremes if we tried, for example by using the passive e-book reader displays instead of LCDs.
For heating I have a stove -- like you say, it's less wasteful than heating with electricity, plus more independent and suckless etcetc. In the winter I complement this with hot water bags to keep me warm until morning when the stove burns out as I sleep, it works very well. The solar powered website gave me a good advice and food for thought: "heat people, not spaces". Not to say I don't heat the inside of the caravan, but I am aware that heating up a whole room is a luxury that is not always necessary.
Next I try to use as much manual power as possible, I never use any electric tools. For example I have a manual powered lawn mower, it works like a charm. Water pressure for the sink and shower can be provided by gravity. I find it ridiculous that people pay for gym memberships and then take elevators and drive electric bicycles and shit. Why not just do useful manual work, burn calories, build muscle, learn skills and save money at the same time?
Thanks to all this I became a little interested in manual and non-electric devices (like that lawn mower I mentioned). Recently at my grandma's house I spotted some cool old manual powered vacuum cleaner, but I don't know how well it works, I couldn't try it yet. Does anyone of you know of any other manual powered devices like this? Please share, I'd love to know.

I had no idea such a thing as manual vacuum cleaners ever existed, I would have assumed those would require too much power to be done manually, I use a cheap Xiaomi vacuum cleaner that charges over 5 volt USB but always use the high power mode (around 50 watts i think) which drains the battery like instantly because i feel like the low power mode kind of do nothing, maybe I should find other ways to dust my floor
have you considered a scythe for your lawn ? i've heard they were insanely fast once you learn how to use them
how do you wash your clothes ? lately I've been trying to unlearn the laundry machine psyop and realize I do not need such a machine at all, I've been washing my clothes in the bathroom sink lately which has the lovely side effect of cleaning the sink too, also I've been seeing youtube videos about a DIY manual washing machine that involves two buckets, a plunger and a few holes I might build it someday but right now my broke ass can't even afford a bucket
also I forgor to mention in my first post but I rarely use the ceiling lights in my apartment, not really to save electricity altho I do save a bit thanks to that but mostly because I find them way too bright, what I use is AA powered LED lamps mostly, main lamp got alkaline batteries and when those die (they lasted longer than I expected) I will replace them with rechargeable NiMH, I also have almost no appliance in standby mode connected to the grid, when I don't use stuff I just flip the switch off on the power strip and physically disconnect everything, same for my internet modem it goes off when i sleep or leave the house

I had never been a fan of smartphones, but as I started to calculate electricity usage I have realised how much they are efficient.
A typical smartphone uses 1-2W. A typical tablet uses 3-5W. Compared to that, my Thinkpad T440p uses 25W.
That is partially because T440p has an old CPU that is not energy efficient. But even compared to modern laptops, those ARM devices are far more efficient than x86 devices.
So now I'm trying to substitute a large portion of my laptop usage with them. By doing that I realised that tiered usage is best.
Subsidiarity again.
You don't need a laptop or a tablet to do tasks like lightweight reading, messaging, basic browsing, &c. A smartphone is enough for that.
Also I found that by using
Termux, I can even use bash, vi, ffmpeg, yt-dlp, &c. I can use ssh to connect to my home server too.
Though it was quite hurtful that I can't use things like dmenu. Also I have to use external mpv app. In fact I can use mpv within Termux, but that requires Pulseaudio which I absolutely hate.
Maybe Linux phone is the answer? Considering that Android becomes more closed.
A tablet is good for tasks that are simple but require a larger screen size than a smartphone. Like drawing / viewing illustrations, watching videos, editing documents, reading books, &c. It can also be a backup for when the smartphone fails.
But a smartphone or a tablet can't do energy intensive tasks like training an AI, running a blockchain node, high performance gaming, &c. Those tasks are for a PC or a laptop. It can also be a backup for when the smartphone and tablet both fail. I think I should divide laptops and PCs, but I currently don't own a PC.

I can't condone the use of smartphones as they are monitoring devices designed to reshape your mind a certain way but I have two laptops that are quite energy efficient, this pinebook pro (ARM based, rk3399) is currently drawing 1 amp off its 3.7V cell so its like less than 4 watts and my Framework 13 with its Ryzen 7640U is currently drawing 700 mA off its 16V battery so its like 12 watts (still quite low for how powerful that machine is)
a cheap solution might be what drummyfish has built with ARM SBCs and random low power components

if you have a machine whose whole goal is to be online 24/7 you might want to optimize the power consumption of that before thinking about your main terminal

Unlike these so called smartphones my dumbphone lasts weeks without charging so you better buy a button phone for grandmas if it's all about that. Smartphones are anything but efficient so I'm a little suspicious about those advertised numbers too, are they what the manufacturer gives for ideal conditions scenario in which the phone isn't constantly sending gigabytes of app updates and spy data there and back? Anyway that Raspberry pi I talked about should also be eating like 1 to 3 watts IIRC, plus you actually have it under control and it won't waste energy on bullshit like telemetry, wifi and pinging radio towers constantly.

I quite appreciate the solutions on this thread, but at the same time it feels that these are engineers' masturbation.
For example personally I want to try SBCs as you recommended. But could grandpas do that?
On the smartphone-tablet-laptop tiered system, after reading this thread I now think that "smartphone" does not need to be the exact smartphones. Any portable devices with that energy efficiency and processing power are fine. I think there are a lot of suckless alternatives to those popular smartphones. The same for "tablet" and "laptop".
So grandpas can use smartphones as "smartphones" while you can use energy efficient suckless alternatives as "smartphones". That will save a lot.
On the energy efficiency of smartphones, it is a well established fact that the electricity usage of smartphones is quite negligible compared to other electronic devices. Personally that was impressive because of the exact reason you said: There are lots of happenings (in a bad way) on a typical smartphone but it is still that efficient. I also found that this is partially because of the small screen size. Display consumes lots of electricity.
Also smartphones are essentially portable computers just with a calling function. So they are alternatives to laptops rather than dumbphones. Dumbphones rather belong to single purpose devices like audio players, e-book readers, &c. Compared to "laptops", "smartphones" are far more efficient.
So maybe using a dumbphone with a suckless portable computer as a "smartphone" could be good.
